| Jews. For the most part, the Haredi either work or live on private charity (not from the state). Many would like to join the military but will not serve in units comprising males and females together (unlike the secular). There is, incidentally, an elite unit of Haredi soldiers who are considered spectactular at their specific (dangerous) tasks. The financial burden of Haredis in Israel is actually slight because they do not need money from the state although they, like others, do receive supplements according to the number of children their family has. I think the problem is that too large a proportion of Haredis live in Israel without doing national service, something that may change with the implementation of a new government (Likud/Yisrael Beiteinu). Other than that, people don`t like them because they are "different" and because they are often seen as making no effort to relate with non-Haredis. As can be seen, Haredis, like most other Israelis, do have have their disputes. |
