At the height of WW II ALL combatants had back channel communications with their opponents.
This was not insane.
That it did not end the war months or years earlier was due to other factors, but the back channels could have.
In particular they could have led to England signaling German Generals that a status quo ante was a possible outcome, but the US insisted upon total surrender, and the war in Europe lasted another year and tens of millions died.
The other case where back channels could have resulted in saving lives was in the Pacific, where at best it could have saved a few months.
As it was, the back channel allowed the US to accept the continuation of the Emperor and not demand unconditional surrender.
A small compromise, but one which save many lives. |
