| The Gulf Cooperation Council (All members are traditional monarchies) was established to ward off both Iran and Iraq. The council members were not particularly happy with the form of Gates suggestion ( The USA publicly suggesting who should join their council) Far more importantly ,on the substance of the suggestion, they were even more unhappy with the idea of an Iraq ruled by a pro Iranian Shiite government in their midst. Some would go as far as to claim that this is part of the new American strategy to involve Iran in the security arrangements in the Gulf region at the expense of the USA traditional allies. There is a feeling among America’s allies in the region that post the invasion of Iraq ,there has been a shift in the balance of power in favour of Iran. Some have hoped that the USA will resist and counter this shift. The pragmatists in Washington seem to prefer acknowledging this shift and accommodating it as long as it preserves what Robert Gates described in his confirmation hearing as American “vital interests” The question is how prepared is Iran to tango ! |
