| Israel should pay ZERO for such a promise - For Israeli Sinai withdrawal in 1956, US "guaranteed" Israeli shipping in the Straits of Tiran; when Nasser blockaded them in 1967, LBJ claimed "he couldn`t find the piece of paper", did nothing. Nixon promised to massively resupply Israel if Egypt attacked first in 1973; promise ignored until Sharon had crossed the Suez, Egypt collapsed and Kissinger realized US had no bargaining chips. Reagan promised no F-15s sold to Saudis would be based near Israel; they are now 50 mi away. For promise of Israeli non-retaliation for Iraqi SCUDs, Bush promised a "Patriot umbrella" he knew to be worthless (it was), flew jets around in Iraq pretending to "SCUD hunt" (they hit not one). For abandoning its Lavi fighter, Israel was promised full participation in the Joint Strike Fighter. Promise broken. Obama "umbrella" will be worthless unless taking the form of providing Trident missile nuclear submarines to Israel - same "guarantee" England has. |
