Shlomo Shamir, Haaretz Correspondent: UN General Assembly chief tries to block Israeli envoy's address
Talkback

"The event is expected to turn into a political debate in light of these changes."

The whole UN General Assembly and sub-units -- including the ICJ and all UN organizations and activities ostensibly dedicated to "human rights" -- has turned into an extended political debate that is shrill, hyperideological, conspiracy theory-oriented, and almost comical. Brockmann is just one more clownish player in that sad slapstick cast.

I consider myself center-left in many respects, am for a two-state solution in the Middle East, and supported Obama and other Democratic candidates in the most recent US election. But I have little hope that the UN will become an organization worth taking seriously anytime in the next half century. I hope the incoming US administration isn`t foolish enough to waste too much time on it (no matter what President Obama feels obliged to say in public).
