Haaretz is assuming, as does everyone else in this country, that Olmert is the lame duck. I believe that it is not the case. By assuming that Olmert is to blame for all Israel`s troubles we are are assuming that firstly - he is guilty of the crimes that he was not even charged with, and second, that he is the only leader who is responsible for all executive decisions by the government. Those that believe him to be the lame duck also think hat Israel`s standing today is much worse then it was at the start of Olmert`s reign as the prime minister. All of those assumptions are fundamentally wrong.
Olmert was not the first PM investigated for corruption, not the first or even a second, to loose a war in Lebanon and not the first to start talking about division of Jerusalem and conceding territories.
Olmert didn`t start a useless war, didn`t break relations with his most important political partners, didn`t push his country and the whole world into a financial crisis. |
