Germany is a leader in solar power. Considering how little sunlight hits so far north, Germany has made a tremendous investment in solar power for relatively marginal returns. It is idealism in action. It will be interesting to see how Germany (and the U.S.) deal with lower oil prices and a weakening economy. The question will be: Can they resist the temptation to put solar on hold.
Another commitment to solar is the tremendous solar project in Spain that came online a year or so ago. When I asked the solar people at the conference with solar was feasible in NY, the answer I got was that it was only feasible in the U.S. in the Southwest deserts. Spain, though is on the same latitude as NY and get the same sunlight. It shows you how Europeons are willing to invest in solar for less return.
At the Israeli clean tech conference I just attended, there was discussion of partnerships between German and Israeli companies concering solar power though I do not recall the exact Co. |
