NATO was an adequate organization when its focus was to defend Western Europe from Soviet expansionism.

After the cold war this is no longer relevant, NATO is bound by the fact that all new members must be part of Europe. While it has tried to compensate for that though bi-national partnerships such as its one with Israel, it is not the same as full membership.

It is time for a new military pact that has the ability to encompass the entire western/developed world, and is more flexible in its goals and missions.

The first new members of this group would be nations like Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand. Latter more contentious nations like Israel, Taiwan, Singapore, and South Africa could be allowed to join.
