Haggai Hitron, Haaretz Correspondent: Israeli Opera to uphold Wagner boycott over link to Nazis
Talkback
Title:Wagner´s Music in Israel
Name:Erico Stern
City: MontevideoState: Uruguay
I saw violinist Isaac Stern (father of the new chief conductor of the Israel Opera, David Stern) crying at the Knesset in Jerusalem when receiving the prestigious Wolf Prize in Music for 1987, because of discrimination in Israel.- He would cry again if he knew that his son is in favor of the ban against Wagner´s music - or any music - in Israel.- Wagner was not Hitler´s favorite composer (it was Franz Lehár) and the music of active Nazi supporters like Richard Strauss and Carl Orff are played in Israel without problem.- Arturo Toscanini conducted Wagner music at the very first concert of the Palestine (now Israel) Philharmonic.-
