Bush had two terms and in eight years accomplished nothing in the Middle East except remove a strong Iraq that helped to keep Iran in check.
Olmert presided over a debacle in Lebanon and allowed Israeli activities in Georgia to anger the Russians. This was not good for Israel as Russia can use the UN seat to veto or water down any sanctions against Iran
If returning the Golan Heights will placate Syria then Israel can focus on dealing with the Palestinians and Iran. There is a limit to the number of enemies Israel can fight at the same time. |
