How is this analysis? This is a hit piece on Edgar Bronfman.
The article states that Mr. Bronfman said, "Judaism belongs to every Jew. There is no need to belong to any religious stream. No need for belief in God or ceremonies and prayers." In doing so, he is arguing against those who would put strict religious tests and requirements on who is a so-called real Jew.
As quoted in the article Mr. Bronfman goes on to say, "Many Israelis who describe themselves as secular are effectively cut off from their people`s tradition." This is due to the strict religious requirements he was just rallying against in the previous quote. The secular Jews, even those living in Israel, are being denied their right to their heritage by those who would judge who is a so-called real Jew and who is not. He is clearly not attacking secular Israelis, but DEFENDING them and their right to be secular and still be Jewish, and he is critiquing those who would label secular Jews as not really Jewish. |
