Anshel Pfeffer: JEWISH WORLD / What American Jews don't get about Israelis

The article misses the central objection of American Jewry to secular Israel. The identity of secular, ethnically-Jewish Israelis has lost touch with so much of the tradition, that even humanistically-inclined Jews abroad no longer feel enough of a link with them, through our common tradition, to feel that they are members of the same tribe. The new Israeli identity does not seem very Jewish to them. Furthermore, the feeling cuts both ways. How many times has the Israeli media quoted secular Israelis saying they have more in common with Israeli or Palestinian Arabs than Diaspora Jews? The idea that they are jealous is reminiscent of the same claim often made, also out of ignorance, by religious Israelis against secular ones.
