| So, secular Israelis speak the Hebrew language! So what? What they lack is what Bronfman referred to as the Jewish heritage. According to some views, the Jewish heritage might include empathy with the stranger, the outsider, the marginalized. It might include aiming for a higher moral standard in relations among human beings. It might mean a commitment to standing up against oppression. All of this has been forgotten by the average, mainstream, Hebrew-speaking secular Israeli whose value-system is dictated by the requirements of the Zionist project in its conflict with the Palestinians. Maybe it is true that most Israelis are merely Hebrew-speaking goyim. For Anshe Pfeffer, this seems to be enough. |
