The problem is how the animals are treated before slaughter. And then, some cruel innovations are put in by big plants to save labor and money, like "shackling."

Decades ago, Rav Moshe Feinstein z"l declared that tethered veal was not permitted, even tho it fulfilled the letter of the law. No doubt he`d say the same about "shackling" today.

Even so, kosher slaughter is more humane than what goes on in ordinary meat plants.
