won`t stay closed for many months if not years? It has been well proven by now, that asymmetric warfare works very well. It will not take every much effort on Iran`s part to close the straits and massive effort to reopen them. the US and Europe do NOT have the resources to reopen the straits other then sporadically, and if the straits are not guaranteed safe, the ship insurance companies and the shippers will refuse to ship through the straits. Notice that the Somali pirates are causing huge changes in shipping patterns and all they do is take a few ships and ransom money. Getting a ship sunk is more than the shippers could tolerate. Note also that if enough ships get sunk in the straits, the shipping channel becomes unusable for an extended period of time.
Have you ever given thought to just how easy it is to sink a tanker with a sunburn missile? Note that Sunburns can take out a Navy ship of the line, so a tanker would be child`s play.
