| I enjoyed your irony. An apt description of the situation. Abbas was upon a doomed mission. But I think he has shown the world that there ARE Palestinians of good will and intent. That may yet be useful to his nation. He has also by example created room for Hamas to moderate it`s positions. Israel with it`s 1967 borders sounds a lot better as a starting point for negotiations than "Israel must be destroyed." The Israeli right believes that somehow the Palestinians will just go away. Anyone retaining their sanity understands that will not happen. The efforts of Mr. Abbas to negotiate with the Israelis might have failed, but he did not fail. There was never any intent by the USA or Olmert to allow him to succeed. When Netanyahu`s Jackboot comes down upon the Palestinians, the world will be more inclined to see the need for a third uprising than the first two. It is unfortunate that Israel wills another round of bloodshed, and the triumph of Hamas, before it will negotiate. |
