Reuters: Fearing attack, Iran militia holds massive defense drill

`... the [Iranian] military said it could close a waterway crucial for world oil supplies if Iran was attacked.`

Well, let`s hope cooler heads prevail, at least until 20 January, and that Obama can then talk some sense into Iran to climb down from its nuclear limb.

Failing that, it might be noted that crude prices and demand are weak and that the US has over a month`s supplies (at current consumption rates) in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

Closing the Hormuz Straits would not be good for anyone, but it would be particularly bad for Iran, which is now burning through its cash reserves at a fast clip, whose economy is increasingly wobbly, and whose internal politics are increasingly unstable as a result.

I`m sure no-one in Tehran is reading this missive (or would pay it any mind even if so): But still, I would advise Iran to avoid conflict (ditto for the US and Israel), and to negociate in good faith with all parties re its nuclear programme and intentions.
