"I do not succumb to the Israeli-American veto." - Abbas
Any prospect of a peace settlement resulting in a Palestinian state has been vetoed. Therefore the statement is meaningless.
" I do what is in the interest of the Palestinian people," - Abbas
Nothing?
Is nothing in the interest of the Palestinian people?
Mr. Abbas was and is a man who wanted to work out the terms for a better life for the Palestinians.
He wanted a peaceful solution.
He had no `partners` willing to pursue that goal on the other side of the table.
Bush wanted only happy headlines and no peace anywhere, while Olmert cowered in fear of doing anything.
Netanyahu is in favor of seeing a one state solution containing no Palestinians.
Obama will not be willing to irritate a significant voting block, or give republicans a chance to call him a traitor to Israel.
Mr. Abbas might as well pack it in. |
