Israel was hardly a great source of food and taxes for the Roman empire, Egypt was far more fertile and northern Italy (which still is)....the Romans NEVER referred to Palestine as Israel, where do you reference this? The jews were really of no concern to the Romans, they were easily crushed just as were all the tribes that lived in Palestine.
"only people in the world ever to take their religion seriously" this is the most ridiculous statement in the world! First of all Hinduism (the worlds oldest religion) was and is taken "seriously" by millions of people. As for the Roman world, it is the most ridiculous statement yet. Many Romans and Celtic tribes died for their faith, to say that there`s was not serious because they worshipped many gods (which there is nothing wrong with) is ridiculous. In fact, historically speaking, "pagan" or polytheistic societies were FAR more religiously (and are...i.e. India) tolerant than were monotheistic tribes (and societies). |
