I heard from someone who ought to know a few years back. He said that Jews in Eastern Europe bought parcels of land through agents of the JNF, with which they formed settlements during the twenties and thirties of the last century. Seems the the survivors who had records went to the JNF to get some money when they came on Aliya.

Lo and behold! the clerks didn`t know what these people were talkin` `bout. "Really, your parents bought a parcel in the Gallilee, that`s interesting". Okay there were people who showed enough concern for the Land of Israel to buy a piece of it so that Jews could settle there, yet . . . when the time came to claim it for "themselves", some other person took it over.

All right, it was a great gesture, but why should people who had nothing remain indigent, and the current landholders "own" it. After all, they come from the right sector of the population, no?
