| America looks out for its own interests in the Middle East very well, indeed. Some, like Noam Chomsky, even go so far as to say that in pursuing its interests "the United States is a leading outlaw state, unconstrained by international law" (Chomsky, What We Say Goes, 2007, p. 1). That view is exreme, in my view, but it still makes sense to reflect on what Stephen Zunes, writing from a perspective similar to Chomsky`s, notes: U.S. policy in the Middle East over the past several decades -- orchestrating military interventions and CIA-backed coups, etc. -- "is remarkably similar to U.S. policy toward Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia" (Zunes, 2006). It is hard to make the argument, then, with any degree of rigor, that the United States in the Middle East is serving Israel`s interests rather than its own. |
