These kids did not come up the idea that this was acceptable behavior by themselves.
If they clearly knew it was unacceptable, would they have cheerfully recorded and distributed it?
I am well - and personally - aware of how easy it is for kids to cross the line of sadism while acting out what they see as an appropriately adult military self-image.
But is not the purpose of military training to impose the correct self-image upon recruits?
If basic indoctrination and subsequent training allowed these kids to believe that this was appropriate behavior, then just how culpable are they?
No doubt we shall see superiors insist that they were properly trained and supervised.
But had they, would they have done what they did much less record and distribute it?
I fear that the small fish will fry, while those far more responsible will get away.
