It was an inflationary era, the inflation had began accelerating in the early 70`s the oil shock and commodity explosion was well underway. Presidents have very little influence on such cycles. He certainly was not the cause. He came in at a difficult time.
US foreign policy was prisoner to Iran under Reagan too. This was simply the legacy of the US support for the Shah. Reagan was `paling` with Iran and Hezbollah to get US hostages released in Lebanon-remember Contra? How about the hundreds of inadequately protected US marines killed whilst interfering in Lebanon under Reagans watch? So whether it`s Reagan`s, Carter`s, Nixon`s or Bush`s legacy they all seem a bit putrid on reflection. Perhaps there`s something common to all of them that needs fixing? |
