| When a great power, such as America or Russia, occupy a country, they install a "friendly government" to avoid complications with the occupation. Of course, when the great power ultimately departs that country, the puppet government is in immediate hot water with the new powers. We saw this happen in Vietnam when America departed and also in Afghanistan when Russia departed. In Iraq, al-Maliki will try to change this formula. He is friendly with Iran and Syria and he is pressing for an American departure from Iraq. al-Maliki is trying to be a survivor. From Americas viewpoint, al-Maliki has gone "rogue". Obviously Israel would like to see a large American presence in Iraq indefinitely, in order to keep Iran and Syria in check. The only way that this is possible is to raise the violence to previous levels. Attacks into Syria and Iran will do this quite well. |
