ND: "Iran should neither confirm or deny"
No, that is not an option for Iran.
Iran is a signatory to the NPT, and that obliges it to declare all of its nuclear program to the IAEA.
So if the IAEA receives intel from Someone Unnamed (*cough* America *cough*) that Iran has a Secret Nuclear Project then the only responses Tehran can make are: 1) Ooops, we`ve been sprung. 2) This intel is wrong.
THIS intel clearly is not strong enough for the IAEA to demand further information from Iran, and so the IAEA is simply *requesting* access.
The Iranians are entitled to turn a request down because - as it should be obvious - to agree is to open the floodgates of "intel reports".
After all, if the Iranians agree to throw open their doors then the USA will simply cry "Yipee!" and tell the IAEA to start looking for nukes under Ahmadinejad`s mattress.
It will become a merry-go-round that neither the IAEA nor Iran will be able to jump off. |
