This is no surprise. Countries take their borders seriously. Ecuador and Venezuela nearly went to War with Columbia over a similar incident last winter. Israel went to war in 2006 over a border violation and shooting.
It would be no surprise also to see discussions aimed at an increase in aid to Syria from Iran and maybe also from Russia, all to increase the size of their military. And they likely will move more assets to the border region with Iraq along with some anti-air assets, just as the Pakistanis have done with Afghanistan.
I doubt that Syria will attack anything or anybody in Iraq.
This incident is also likely to have an impact on the Iraq-US Sofa negotiations. If those are not concluded and signed by Dec 31, the US may have to exit Iraq, precipitously. |
