| Netanyahu is used to the days in which Israel can do anything and still count on limited and unquestioning support from America. Those days are gone. As much as Israelis make a show of scorn upon American "interference" in Israeli affairs, Israel needs American support and needs it badly. The final decisions on Jerusalem and other matters relating to peace will be made in Washington. It has become clear to the American political establishment, including President Bush, that leadership is needed to push the peace process forward. All there has ever been from Israel is obfuscation, delay, and excuses. This has hurt American interests, cost American lives, and threated world peace. Israel is too close to the problem to manage it. Of course, Netanyahu knows all of this, but he still flexes his mouth for the locals. When Barak did this, badmouthing Bush`s call for peace by years end, Rice was immediately dispatched to Israel to stifle Barak, which she did quite successfully. |
