Tzipi Livni`s reported bounce in the polls is more akin to the `dead cat bounce` so beloved of financial markets, than anything meaningful upon which to hang a marginal electoral success, at best.

President Shimon Peres needs to get seriously presidential about this guff, and simply hold all parties` feet to the fire until someone forms a government, with elections only to happen in 2010. At which time, all the heroes can present themselves to the electorate.

Politicians such as Tzipi Livni are elected to form a government for the elected duration, they are not elected to have a mandate to engage in a rolling squabble in the Knesset and call elections on the fly like some kind of get out of jail free card. Any existential threat to Israel is easily taken care of by the bureaucracy and services which underpin any government.

Tzipi Livni is right to not be held hostage to the demands of those parties who would act like professional peasants at everyone else`s expense and have
