| Syria wants the Golan back. They expect to get it as part of a peace treaty with Israel. Israel will not be interested in a peace treaty with Syria unless Israel will have much to gain in exchange for the Golan. This means that, at the moment, it is in Syrias interest to support Hizbollah to the maximum degree possible in order to motivate Israel toward peace. It is also in Syrias interest to get more modern Russian anti-air weapons and to grow closer with Iran. All these things are on the table in the case of a peace treaty with Israel, but until that happens, Syria will pursue their own interests. |
