Hello Mark, Your post is just what I was thinking about the other day with this whole scenerio of Israel`s system, and of course the advantages and disadvantages of the Parliamentary system. Given this complication with what has ensued politically in Israel, once again an election is required and the uncertainty of the peace process is the double whammy. I believe that Israel has a good democratic process but it seems nothing really gets done. The U.S. system looks quite attractive but you have to be a zillionaire to run for office! Hillary Clinton has a 30 million debt...ouch! I don`t know if you knew but my father, who`s from a large lower class family of Iraqi Jewish descent, ran for the Israeli parliament back in the late 50`s, early 60`s and just missed being granted a seat for his (Mapam party), a somewhat leftist party. But the idea of only needing a few thousand votes to be granted a seat in Knesset is pretty amazing. There`s a political party for every sector of Israel. |
