I agree with your view, since Pius` religion is not one that Jews adhere too, then to bring up this subject really is pointless. While personally I think his wartime papacy is overscrutinized (Jews ask for the archives to clear his name, but they provide little as far as evidence of complicity), I don`t see the logic of the Churchs` attempt to make him a Saint. He really did not do anything to be worthy of such a designation. The late Pope John Paul is more deserving. One thing that is overlooked, is that the Nazis were not exactly a Catholic group. Though they may have back-downed on some minor issues, an edict from Pius would not have stopped the Holocaust. And the benefit of saving lives from such an edict is overblown. The Nazis had no problems rounding up protesting clergy and sending them to their deaths with the Jews. Considering Hitler`s penchant for rolling the dice against the odds, I would not have been surprised he would have let the Catholic Church fall in such a case.
