I think the Romans wanted every potential Messiah executed because they were all seen as threats to Roman occupation of Israel. That Jesus looked guilty of blasphemy did not help his case. The Talmud does refer to his practice of magic (b. Sanh. 43a), but his message in Matthew 10:34-37 (the sword) and Luke 12:51-53 (division) was the exact opposite of reconciliation, and it in fact resulted in 2,000 years of bloodshed.
