He was a hero because he said right before he died: "I am a Jew. My father is a Jew. My mother is a Jew". He was killed because he was a Jew. Being a foolish liberal Jew was not the reason he was a hero. As a side note, Pearl mentioned his grandfather Chaim Pearl. He said that he was one of the founders of a certain city in Israel and a street there is named after him. He said this because this is what he was most proud of.
