"The McCarthyism of the past several weeks helped me to make my decision." - Mark of Lewiston As Powell observed, the republican party has gone so far right it is not recognizable. I can remember when, in 1964, there was a black Senator, and he was a republican, Edward Brooks. There was also a woman Senator, and she was nominated as a possible candidate for president at the 1964 convention - Margaret Chase Smith. There was even a liberal republican - whom I opposed - nominated, Nelson Rockyfeller. All that is left of that once Grand Old Party is right wing lunatics. |
