| Certain segments of the Israeli public make it impossible for Hamas to trade for Shalit. All of the public dithering and kibitzing have disrupted public discourse in Israel and have done so for years. Always we see the same old ideas for a solution. "Cut off Gaza!", "Bomb Gaza!", "Arrest Hamas!", "Attack Hamas", etc. Of course, all of these things have already been done in Shalits name and none have worked. In fact, you might say that Shalit has been bought and paid for already in Palestinian blood and suffering. It was international pressure that prevented Israel from continuing this behavior indefinitely. Israel has completely mishandeled this affair from beginning to end and Hamas has enjoyed every minute of it. It seems like Hamas doesn`t want it to end. The only thing that could make it better for Hamas is if Israel actually did attack Gaza or cut off all supplies again. Ultimately, this is always a winner for Hamas and Israel is forced to relent. |
