What colonial powers? Aside from a few islands like Greenland (Denmark), Johnston Atoll (U.S.), and Pitcairn Island (U.K.), there aren`t very many colonies left in the world. The only one still left on the mainland of a continent that I`m aware of is Gibralter (U.K.)
The other 5 non-permanent members of the UNSC (which were not mentioned in the article) whose terms expire at the end of 2009 are Burkina Faso, Costa Rica, Croatia, Libya, and Vietnam. So, the Muslim countries on the SC next year will be Turkey and Libya; plus Burkina Faso is 50% Sunni Muslim and I`d have to look up Uganda. Thus, the world of Islam will be fairly represented in the UNSC next year without Iran. |
