The `Lehman Brothers` which tanked, had noting in common with the firm established by Henry Lehman.
It was using, fourth hand, a name made respectable by a young man who was shrewd enough to treat raw cotton as currency, and to then trade that cotton in the North where there was species to exchange for trade goods.
The :Lehman Brothers developed into both commodities trading and brokerage. They went on to finance recovery in the South and earned a reputation for honesty, prudence, and practical business.
The Lehman Brothers divested by American Express in 1994 shared none of those qualities, and only used, some might say abused, an honorable name. |
