I had to read the following paragraph twice to make sure that I wasn`t in fact reading an article about Iran or Saudi Arabia: "Tawfik Jamal, an Arab resident of the mixed city, was arrested on Monday on suspicions of "harming religious sensitivities, speeding and reckless endangerment" in connection to the violence." Yom Kippur is a religious holiday, and Israel is a democratic country that assures religious freedom to all of its citizens, at least theoretically. If this is legally binding, then we have much greater problems on our hands than a mere insult on Yom Kippur. The gangs of fanatics and extremists that chose militia-style revenge on Yom Kippur should be held in prison and judged by the courts. Instead, they are being pacified. But there is a price for this appeasement. Tawfik Jamal is not the only lamb that is being sacrificed. What the authorities must understand is that they are spelling out the death of Israel as a democracy.
