How do you bring a kid connect to get beyond popular music and connect to real music.
Using theatricality is one bridge whether it`s Fantasia or Peter and the Wolf. Music that tells a story has a long history. My daughter is now 8 years old, and I`ve been playing her classical music and telling her stories made up on the fly to go with the music for years.
Another is for a kid to hear a piece often enough so that they can hear the tune in their head and pick them out on a keyboard. My daughter taught herself to pick out the "Ode to Joy" theme from Beethoven`s 9th, and she`s quite fond of it.
She`s taking piano lessons now which she loves, but, like me, she`ll never be any kind of musician. What hopefully she will do is see music as an extension of what she thinks and feels, and if she does that, classical music will seem like a feast, and popular music will seem like fast food. |
