Theese are the old problems 1) there cannot be a "democratic" leadership-decision (order to fight) in war, and 2) (- as Uri writes - "the commander will be juged by history") afterwords everybody is more "intelligent" (knows, what the right thing would have been to do).

You might consider also the situation if there would have been a percee in the north (both from a military and political perspective). So there were certainly considerations (I mean for the expected peace (still-fire) that was probably expected by the commander.)

I think, the article - although technical and in-dept-is very well written and quite gripping. (Must be a delight in Hebrew.)
