The attack on Sternhell, most likely perpetrated by the radical right, is of extreme concern and should be condemned. The very fact that certain extreme settlers sometimes violently oppose the IDF in the West Bank and often reject the authority of the state is enough reason for alarm.
Nevertheless, Sternhell`s comments that the attack could represent "the beginning of the disintegration of democracy" is so painfully comical that is masks how narcissistic the statement is.
The Israeli left needs to stop its egocentrism in order to view the Palestinians as equal human beings that should be held accountable for their moral failures.
Vilifying the settlers as the principal impediment to peace, rather than reasonably criticizing their (failed) messianic project, is symptomatic of this leftist narcissism, and has turned into its own impediment to peace. |
