You obviously get your knowledge of Iran history from right-wing neo-cons. Yes, Iran was embroiled in a war with Saddam, and yes they did lose a million people, and yes a cease-fire was agreed to at the end. But you make it sound like that was Iran`s choice to go to war and that it was Iran that somehow lost. History shows that Iraq, supported by most of the west and egged on by the US and most Arab countries, attacked Iran to try to undue the US-hostile Shia-driven revolution. At that time, Iran was at a dangerously weak point (it had just had a revolution and exiled the old leadership, just vanquished most of it`s military officers because they were US stooges, westerns countries arming Saddam to the teeth and providing all sorts of intelligence and military / financial assistance, etc). Despite these weaknesses and and in spite of the powerful might arrayed against it, Iran was still able to withstand the Iraqi onslaught and did not give up one inch of it`s land neither to Saddam..
