Was this article written by the same Tom Segev who has written so astutely about Israel? To suggest that in the US it is business as usual 7 years after 9/11 is bizarre to put it mildly. Using 9/11 as excuse Bush and his gang launched an illegal war in which thousands of people - including our own servicemen and women - have died needless deaths. Meanwhile, the US taxpayer has bank-rolled the war effort - the privatisation of which has made the political-economic elite of this country more rich and more powerful.
Meanwhile in the US and many other countries Bush`s War on Terror has become the excuse for whittling away people`s civil liberties to the point that democracy has become hollowed out. It has also become the excuse for supporting even further governments - including brutal, rights-abusing ones such as that of Israel and Sri Lanka - that are engaged in conflict with rebels (now cast more resolutely than ever as `terrorists`). What planet was Segev on when he wrote this? |
