| Recently the American president and the secretary of state criticized Israels settlement expansion, calling it "an impediment to peace". For the first time in three decades, America is developing diplomatic ties with Iran. Also for the first time in decades a high ranking American official (Rice) has visited Libya. All these things are signs of change in American policy in the region. At the AIPAC convention Obama called for an "undivided Jerusalem". Soon after, he retracted his words. The American leadership has come to realize that the road to stability in the mideast does not come from pouring unlimited weapons into an expansionist Israel and asking no questions of Israeli policies and actions. Israel is not a major factor in this election. The reason is that the two parties have similar views concerning Israel and the "peace process". Bush has officially noticed the elephant in the drawing room. Israeli actions are anti-peace. This will shape Americas policy. |
