Are you aware of what happened at Stalingrad and Monte Casino? In both instances the theory was that if you used enough artillery and enough warplanes there would be no one left to resist the invading army. What actually happened was that the defending armies survived the bombardment, and when the attacking infantry came in to claim the territory, they found that the rubble provided a horrific killing zone for the defenders. Worst still, the rubble made it impossible for tanks and other armoured vehicles to get about. When you try to flatten urban areas, you guarantee that your soldiers will have to fight hand-to-hand in difficult terrain. |
