| Sometimes, when fighting a big forest fire, the firefighters must actually start a new fire. Although this is counter-intuitive, the smaller, controlled fire is meant to burn away an area in order to stop the larger fire from advancing. In the same manner, Israel made an evacuation from Gaza. It was a small evacuation of about 8000 settlers but this evacuation was anything but controlled. It was poorly planned, poorly executed, and its aftermath continues to be a chronic problem in many ways up until today and beyond. It was meant to be so. If this chaos was caused by evacuating 8000 settlers, can anyone estimate the chaos involved in evacuating 400,000 or more? The floundered evacuation from Gaza was an excuse given by Israels leadership to itself to avoid considering the larger west bank evacuation. In fact, since the Gaza evacuation, the west bank settlements have absorbed triple the number of settlers as were evacuated from Gaza, including some of the Gaza settlers. |
