Livni and Mofaz are no different from the average politician:
If they would know, that they could win votes by supporting a bill, they would of course support it.
The problem is, that the Israeli society has taken a significant turn to the right over the past decade (Russian immigration during the 90`s surely played a major role in there).
The Israel of 2008 is not too far away from Iran anymore, when it comes to the influence of religious fundamentalists on the daily life, as well as (and especially) politics.
Even if as a woman in Tel Aviv, you can still dress in a mini-skirt today....
