In 2006, the IDF did exactly what you`re proposing, but couldn`t find Shalit. They destroyed many areas of Gaza and killed about 400 Gazans.
But they then started to take casualties at levels they were unwilling to sustain and withdrew.
At the same time they started arresting the Hamas legislators in the West Bank (they couldn`t find the ones in Gaza) and later admitted in IDF court that those legislators were taken as hostages for Shalit. They tried to put one on trial but couldn`t convince an IDF judge that there was a case. All other legislators are held without charge or trial.
The Olmert government has taken many others in the West Bank under nearly identical circumstances and holds them as hostages without trial or charge. |
