I have a feeling that this is a test to gauge people`s susceptibility to media influence and perhaps also a means to further fractionalize Israeli society. Recall the string of 15 or so school shootings in America. I have no doubt that the constant media attention of the first several convinced other unstable kids to go and do the same.
It is more likely that stories like this and the over attention they get are simply a means to make us stop trusting one another. Again, look at America. The local news is known to make it seem that violence always increasing when in fact it is decreasing. What`s the effect of this? Neighbors don`t speak to one another, people are less likely to help strangers and so on.
In countries like America and Israel where a large percentage of the population is immigrant - here we have Sphardi and Ashkenazi Israelis, Arabs, Russians, Georgians, Americans, French, Africans, Thai, etc. - it is that much easier to play on our inherent xenophobia. |
