| As Shalit enters his third year of captivity what exactly has Hamas or Gaza gained by his kidnapping. Has one single prisoner been freed. Are the crossings open to bilateral trade. Are the people of Gaza better off. Has their quality of life improved one iota since Shalit was taken. Will it improve in the future. I sometimes wonder if Hamas does not regret the whole incident and would love to see it end but, like all palestinian groups, has to play to the "street` and has now painted itself into a corner. We are coming to the end of the Olmert Era and I doubt if the next goverment will be so feeble in its efforts. You would think that Hamas would take this into account but they made big promises at the time of the kidnapping and now cannot renege even it means more pain for the people of Gaza. They have to choose, Shalit in captivity and life as it is now or a free Shalit and all the crossings open to trade again and a far better quality of life. Its their choice. |
